Erik Kirschbaum is a freelance journalist and author. He regularly appears as a studio guest and U.S. analyst on programs aired by WELT TV, phoenix, ZDF, ARD, and CNN, as well as on radio stations such as Deutschlandfunk, RBB, WDR, SWR, and BR.
From 1989 to 2017, Kirschbaum reported from more than 50 countries as a foreign correspondent based in Germany and Austria for the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters. During this time, he wrote his books Rocking the Wall, about a 1988 Bruce Springsteen concert in East Berlin, and Soccer Without Borders, about Jürgen Klinsmann and his work as coach of the German and U.S. national teams.
Since 2017, Kirschbaum has been a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times, the South China Morning Post, and The Independent (London). He began his journalism career at the Redding Pilot in Connecticut. He has also written for newspapers and magazines such as the Las Vegas Sun, Time, The New York Times, and the Madison Capital Times in the U.S., as well as for WELT and Der Tagesspiegel in Germany.
Kirschbaum studied history and German language and literature in Wisconsin and Freiburg.
